AWD not working
I have a 2004 XC90 with 80,000 miles on it. This vehicle has gone through 3 sets of tires in the 2 1/2 years that I have had it, multiple suspension boots (due to factory recalls), and am currently having issues with the AWD. I had to have it towed into the dealership last week because the Anti-skid sensor was gone and the vehicle wouldn't go over 15mph. It was as if the wheels were constantly spinning on ice even on clean dry pavement. When the service department looked at it, they said that I needed 2 new rear wheel bearings (which I replaced), a new anti-skid sensor (which I replaced), AND the BIG one...a bevel gear sleeve repair for approximately $600.00 although it may require replacement and the cost of that is unknown to me at the moment. They said the bevel gear sleeve was stripped and that because of this my AWD is not working. What is going on with this car? Am I going to blow the transmission if I wait o get the bevel gear sleeve fixed? I have purchased 3 other Volvo's frm this dealership and have had NO problems whatsoever with any of them except for this one! I feel like the service department sometimes takes advantage of the fact that I am a 30 year old single female that knows little to nothing about cars. How should I go about these repairs as my warranty is up....
Welcome to the site,
It sounds like you have the T6 (turbo 6 cylinder) engine as from what I have read their AWD tends to eat tires. Is that the case? The T6 badge will be on the back of the car if it is, otherwise you have a 5 cyl turbo. If it is the T6, fix what you can and put a for sale sign on it. They have been plagued with problems, most notably a transmission that fails and costs $4K-$6K.
Speaking of tires, when you have had them replaced did you do it 2 at a time or all 4? And between replacing did you rotate them at a regular interval?
There are a lot of Volvos in new england and a lot of independent shops as well that can do the work for usually much better $$$ than the dealer. An 04 with 80K, I would stay away form the dealer as much as possible since they will always be able to find something to fix or maintain.
Hopefully you find this site helpful and informative, if you think you are being fed a line at the dealer, just ask here and the folks are good to tell you what they know.
