Is it the injector's??
Is it the injector's??
This is my first Volvo. A BEAUTIFUL 2004 V70 2.5T!! 57030 miles for less than 10 grand! Everything I have wanted in my old age for a long distance traveler. I did the research, [as best I could for my computer skills] asked around to all the EXPERTS I knew. And took the plunge. At first I was VERY happy. Ran great all the across the country. Now, here in North Georgia,[where there is nothing but ethanol mixed gas] it runs like CRAP!! Miss firing on different cyl, at different times, but it drives down the road fine for a few seconds, than starts missing. Always fill with premium gas, replaced the spark plugs, added octane boost, ran it down the road a high speed for about ten miles. NOTHING helps. When I first start it in the morning it runs fine. As soon as it reach's operating temp, it starts missing bad. I even have to put it in neutral at stop lights and stop signs. Took it to an Auto-Zone to hook up to the computer. Says it is missing! DUHHH! I would love to get it fixed ASAP. All this missing has to be REAL bad on the turbo. Also, I was told that this model should get around 31 MPG. HAAA! I have not broke 23 MPH since I got it. I am starting to hate this car. All help would be appreciated. Thank you very much.

Is your check engine light on? If so, get it read with an appropriate code reader and post the codes back here.
Do you have the maintenance records? Check to see if the spark plugs were ever replaced. If they are originals at 57,000 miles, they are likely out of specs and could be causing problems.
Your mileage is still relatively low, but common maintenance work still needs to be done.
PS. The plural of injector is injectors. No apostrophe for plural nouns, unless possessive.

Thank you for the Grammar lesson.
Kind of hard to find an appropriate code reader here. Hotlanta is a hundred miles away, so no dealer for me. As posted, I changed the plugs, the check engine light is on. It has to be on before a reader will work I guess. That is what I was told anyway. I even bought a fuel filter. And OF COURSE, mine is the model with the internal tank fuel filter. I changed the oil before I left Idaho, changed the tran fluid. I did not get a tune-up, it was running great when I left. We don't have much ethanol-gas up where I live. On the other hand, I have been driving a 93 3/4 ton dodge cummins for the last 15 years, so I may not have noticed. That truck gets 20 mpg and always did! Darn shame I just did not by a better seat for that! It would have been SO much cheaper!

Very unlikely injectors, HIGHLY likely ignition coils. When you got codes read did it show misfire code for a specific cylinder or for many cylinders or was it the general code with no specific cylinder? Usually you will have the general code which sets first and then another code or two for the cylinder or cylinders that are misfiring.
All the coil on plug engines have some failures of the coils.

Pull into an Advance Auto Parts store, or a place like that, and have them read the codes for you. They'll do it for free in the hopes of selling you some parts to fix it.

The "fancy" plugs with multiple electrodes and such may cause issues. Stick with OEM plugs. They are so rarely changed that it's worth it to just plunk down the extra bit of money for them.
The ethanol in gas shouldn't be causing any issues. I'm wondering if it could be an air/fuel problem related either to the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) or oxygen sensors (O2).
As was suggested, still a good idea to check out those coils. I've heard one trick involved taking the spark plug cover off, and then running the car in the dark while looking for any electrical arcing near the coils.

OK: I replaced the plugs with the high end NGK's I was thinking that it might be an electrical problem. I went to try the watching the coils in the dark trick, But, OF COURSE, the front bolt on the turbo pipe is totally rounded out and I can't get it off with the tools I have, and OF COURSE, two of the bolts on the spark plug cover are right under the darn thing! So, got anything else?
Really good suggestion though. I will go back to Auto-Zone and try to get the codes, and post them on here. Thanks again.

Either Volvo plugs or cheap "Bosch Super Copper Core Plugs" (gap to 0.032" per Ipd recommendation for G2 cars) will work.ecbsykes wrote:The "fancy" plugs with multiple electrodes and such may cause issues. Stick with OEM plugs.

BTW, add a bottle of TECHRON to your gas tank might help greatly to clean injectors.

Hello again Guy's and gals. First off, Thank you all for your excellent suggestions and remedies. OK: Here is what has happened since the last post. I had to take a trip to NC. I barley made it there. I had to keep the RPM's up over 3000 just to get it down the road. When I filled it up, it ran REALLY bad. As the gas was used, it got a little better, but not much. I took it to a shop. They had to drop the tank and pump it all out. As the mech said, "WE PUMPED OUT ABOUT 3 1/2 GALLONS OF ETHANOL ENRICHED WATER!!" How the heck did it even run??? Must have been the additives I have been dumping in. That took care of about half the problem. That cost me right around $300. I went to the Volvo dealer in Greensboro NC. and bought an injector because the #2 cyl. kept misfiring. That took care of MOST of the problem. That darn dealer charged me $213 for that one injector. I won't even tell you how much they wanted to replace the thing, so I did it myself. I still had a misfire happening. I got on Ebay and found the ones I needed for $35 EACH!!!!!! WTF????? Those THIEVES at the dealer should be HUNG! Today the it misfired badly again going up a hill. The check engine light came on and stayed on. So I stopped at an Auto Zone and got a read out. The code it came up with is "P0302" That's right folks, MISFIRING ON CYL #2!!!!! So I bought a coil pack to go on good old #2!. That was another $53. But at least I COULD buy that from Auto Zone. MAN!! I hope this crap is fixed after all this. I don't have much overdraft protection left! Again, THANK YOU ALL for the help. I will let you know how it turns out in the next few days. I MAY NEED YOUR HELP AGAIN! ------------JERRY
