This doesn't actually make noticeably more power from the engine, it merely allows a little more air through at a lower throttle setting. You can achieve the same effect by stepping on it a little harder. This was put in place to prevent soccer moms from spinning the tires in unpaved soccer field parking lots.
A K&N air filter in the factory box might be worth 10HP, and a custom sport exhaust might be worth another 10.
If that ain't fast enough, sell it and get a turbo.

yea i dont like having to stomp on it to get it going and wouldnt the intake just sound nicer if the plate is swaped also i have an airrade intake cone on a short intake tube that comes right off the tb and i modded the cold air intake system by running a volocity funnel in the grill and using a bigger diameter tubing that runs into my homemade airbox deff makes a lil difference when u have 200 thousand on a 94 wagon i know its gonna be slow but mines already keepin up with na civics and does anyone know were to get a cheapish performance exhaust

You can remove the chunk of plastic, but you'll end up with two holes in the plate. You have to fill them in.

My 96 NA wagon makes Civics look dumb already, and it's bone stock, with 199K on the clock.
The 97 shames anything short of a Vette* coming off the line.
If you're having to pull engine hacks to do that, perhaps you should be looking for a tune-up item that's worn.
What cdnbluez said about the throttle plate. If you leave the holes open, it's like, well, stepping on the gas. Alternately, I've heard you can pull the throttle plate from a 940/960. Also, I've seen wider throttle bodies, check www.volvomotorsports.com
About exhausts; I believe TME makes one, but I don't like importing regulated parts. Best bet is a local custom shop, not a Midas or anything, a real custom shop. Drive up on a nice day, look through the open door, and make sure they're doing mandrel bends.
* - I haven't tried it against police cruisers.

An exhaust won't really give you much more power on an NA engine. OBX makes good kits for the turbo, so look into those. Don't expect any crazy HP gains, though - from that or the cone filter. 10 hp from either is a bit optimistic.
Get the 960 throttle plate. More zip off the line without mashing it, but nothing more at wide-open throttle.

Personally, I fail to understand how the throttle plate mod is a gain at all.
My right ankle works perfectly well already, and achieves the same thing.
jblackburn, my understanding is really nothing will do more for an NA, it's already a highly tuned engine; but if he does _everything_ it might add up to a few more horses, or a few more foot-pounds... at least psychosomatically.
Come to think of it, modding in an intake manifold from the early 10V might be worthwhile, if you can find one - they had two distinct air channels and a flapper to control them; shorter at low RPM, larger at mid RPM, and both at high RPM. The report was a noticeable improvement in low-end torque. The design intent is a poor man's supercharger; supposedly, the back-pressure waves from the closing intake valves reflect off the throttle body plate to arrive back at the valves just as they reopen for the next cycle, literally pushing air into the cylinder by acoustic resonance. You'll need to wire a switch to the dashboard to control it, since the 20V ECU isn't set up for it.

I think it's more of a thing that tricks you into thinking the car has more power without pressing on the throttle very much.
Ever driven a newer Toyota Corolla/Ford Escape? The things will LURCH off the line with very little throttle pressure - the electronic throttle is there to give the impression that the car has more power than it really does upon the initial test drive; then you find out later on that they really have nothing left to give after 1/2 throttle when the electronic throttle has already got it wide open. I hate those electronic throttles - they're far too sensitive.
Here's something one of our members did fitting a VVIS system from a 93/94 to a '95 model that wasn't equipped with it.

I have a 2010 Honda rental right now - my darling wife rearranged the right fender on the 97.
If I look at the gas pedal crosswise, it goes to full throttle, which thankfully ain't saying much.
Mechanical or electronic, I hate overly sensitive throttles. The sort-of logarithmic response of a Volvo pedal, I've always felt was one of its stronger points as a driver's car. If I want a lot of power, I can ask for it. If I want a little bit, I don't have to try and twitch my foot without really pressing. Just the way it should be.

Please punch your high school English teacher. To answer your question, when you remove the plastic off the 850 plate it leaves a large hole.bmxandy89 wrote:iv been searching around tryin to find ways to get a lil more out of my na and came across the tb mod i was wondering since its just a piece of plastic on the back of the plate cant i just cut it off if i use a driemel or something and just be carefull because if the 960 tb plate is the same just with out the plastic cuting it shouldnt matter
Try driving a manual 850 some time with then without the plastic chunk. Most 850s sold in Europe didn't have it.kcodyjr wrote:Personally, I fail to understand how the throttle plate mod is a gain at all.
