Seen a volvo door that wont open from the inside or outside?

Post by VolvoVieve »

Funny thing happened recently as i was outside my local auto zone, i got in my car closed the door and it locked in place. Could not open it from the inside, so i climb over the passsenger very dukes of hazard style and had the same problem from the outside, the sound is there but it wont open and now the lock wont even turn with my key! As you know the panel cant be removed when the door is closed. So, after careful adjusting I have been able to wedge the panel back a few inches, just enough to get my finger in where i can feel the components that attach to the lock, but i have no idea what im feeling for or how to unhinge the lock. Can anybody help me with tips or diagrams please- i will do a write up with helpful info when it's fixed so nobody has this issue again.
Thanks

I haven't been inside the doors on my car yet, so I'm no help there. But I'd suggest down loading the service manual from the repair database - that should have some diagrams for you. Also, you'll probably want to pull the seat out as well to give yourself more room to work, although it may require pulling both seats to get it out the passenger side.

I think someone on volvospeed had this issue a while back and figured out how to get the door panel off, though I don't remember if it was front or back.

Just today I created a new post about this subject. (I didn't find yours earlier when searching or I would have just replied to yours). This door problem has happened to my front driver's side door and front passenger door. (Back doors open fine from inside). The only way to exit the car from the front seat is to roll down the window, reach out and grab the door handle and open the door from the outside. So the door locks work and even the keypad locks and unlocks them. The only thing that doesn't work is the lever inside that is used to open the door. :?

I had the same issue with one of my 850's. You have to take the door panel off. There is a 3 inch pin that sits on two brackets to the left of the door (looking from inside the cabin). One of them is easily visible and for the other one you will have to pull on the door handle and it will slide to where you can see it. This pin was about $80 at a dealership. I cut a 3 inch piece of metal coat hanger and bent each end to hook around on the bracket and it worked fine since then.

Thanks iluvmyslut. I'll pull the doors off and see. Another guy on another post said his was a plastic piece that broke. But regardless, I'm not paying $80 per side to the "stealership". I will use stiff wire like a coat hanger or go to Home Depot or Lowes and fabricate something. Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it!

if it wont open from the inside it is because the "hook" that connects the door handle ( inside) to the locking mechanism has fallen off or it has broken in some fashion. either way ... you will have to completley remove the door panel...three screws on the bottom..one in the front near the little storage section ...then the handle just pulls straight up..the corner cover near your mirror just pops off...also pop of the screen like cover for your speaker then remove the bottom right screw that holds your speaker onto the door...just that one only..then three torx screws in the door panel itself...then jiggle it all off !
you will look for a piece of metal about three inches long dangling near the door lock mechanism itself..that is your problem ! hook one side to the door handle release ( the part you pull on from the inside) & either jam a soda can so that the outside is engaged (or have someone pull on it for you) then you will see the other end of where you must hook up the three inch long wire to. You cant see it until u engage the door from the outside...good luck !

The poster has a C700 which is different. I pulled the panels last year on my S70 and they are clipped all around ( with the bad green eco crappy glue) and I believe a torx behind the inside door handle, lift and pull kinda deal.
I had the same problem on my 850, went to my donor car, took it off, intalled on my car and done, you can go to the junkyard and get them, will take off the other side on donors car and take a photo for reference.

Most, if not all, C70 convertibles use "deadbolting" door lock assemblies. There is an additional motor on the lock assembly and it moves a linkage that blocks the inside door handle function on top of the normal locking function. If the deabolt motor doesn't work you are in a bad situation. Volvo offered this in other markets on S70 and V70 models too. I have only seen the feature on convertibles. There are no other buttons or anything to indicate the feature is present. I recall the feature only being activated if you pressed lock button on remote twice but I think there are options on the VST menu that requires a PIN that may allow it to be deadbolted with every locking sequence.
