S80 2001 Rear doors wont open from inside / outside

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

S80 2001 Rear doors wont open from inside / outside

Post by jpskiller »

HI,

For a while now they had stopped opening from outside but I was still able to open from inside until other day.

When I unlock/lock the car the rear doors appear to unlock / lock makes all the right noises and the latch pops up/down, but the doors refuse to open from outside or inside.

Does any have any ideas, it's not the child lock that is off, I have also tried replacing the RMi3 Relay (deadbolting).

If the door card has to come off does anyone have a guide with pictures on how to release the deadlock mechanism.

I believe the door cards will have to be completely destroyed to remove, anyone know the best place to cut through to try and make as little damage as possible.

So both rear doors are inoperable? If so did they both fail at the same time? Do you have passengers that use the rear doors frequently when the other doors are locked? Does the car have auto door lock once you get moving?

Just looking for clues.

Did you try using the key and double turning? Try the inside unlock button? Did you look at the manual and see if there is a feature that may have been messed up or a way to program the key for all doors? Maybe have the main door module reprogrammed?

I know on my old XC70 sometimes one of the doors (left rear) would get out of sync and not behave correctly. By pushing down the lock manually and cycling it a few times it would start working again. No clue why or what was going on.

It just seem really odd, for me, that both doors would have this failure. I would first exclude all electrical and software possibilities. Maybe call the local dealer and inquire. It is possible the main door module, in the driver's door, is the issue. Possible to jumper?

If all else fails, before cutting into the door cards, I would look up some pictures of how the inner door locking mechanisms work. Focus on a way to use a Jimmy bar to pull the bar or cable. Don't worry about the alarm or security system - you just want to get the door open. Maybe ask a locksmith if this is possible.

Hopefully someone will chime in that has taken off the door cards, had the same issue or knows how the system works.

I have regular passengers in back seat, they have not opened from outside for quite some time, they don't auto lock when driving as far as I know, I have tried battery disconnect and a couple of other things suggested from different sites.

As of last night, the driver's side rear door has decided to work from outside and inside, I tried for the 50th time of pushing the latch down then opening from inside and it worked, passenger rear door however does not work from out or in.

Well you solved 50% of the problem.

The reason I asked about passengers opening the door is I wonder if it causes the system to get out of sync. Having it happen to me that was all I could figure out. Which rear door is used the most?

At this point - I would take out the door card on the rear driver's side and look at how the thing is set up as a reference point for the passenger side. Maybe you will see some way to mechanically (Jimmy bar) open the passenger door short of destroying the door card.
