Volvo 940 not taking gas right away.

Post by SteveArizona »

I have a Volvo 940 wagon turbo with around 200,000 miles on it. (the odometer/speedometer has occasionally stopped working).
Recently, it has been really rough coming out of a complete stop. You step on the gas and it does not accelerate until 30 seconds later. I've tried changing the fuel filter (had no effect), cleaning the fuel injectors (helped just a little), better grade of gasoline, (helped just a little). The problem gets worse when it is very cold and wet. It also seems to be made worse by driving into strong winds. Do you have any suggestions as to what might be causing this problem and what I should check next?

Hey SteveArizona,

Have you ever checked for codes from the on-board OBD? The directions are posted above in the forum. It is pretty easy to do with a printout handy.

I have a non-turbo 940 so I am not as familiar with the turbo, but I am betting it is an engine sensor or MAF issue. It sounds like you are getting gas since it does eventually accelerate, so both your fuel pumps would appear to be working.

Good luck,

Dave

Examine the turbo, it sounds like extreme turbo lag, which these cars don't usually have much of. Check that intake hose connecting to the turbo, I wonder if it might be cracking open.

As for your speedometer/odometer, that's likely the wires from the sending unit being worn and not making a good connection. It's on the rear axle, look down there with a flashlight.
