Do you need to bleed the brakes with ABS to change them?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

I was told by a mechanic that if you dont bleed the brakes rather than just compressing the piston with ABS that you will mess up the unit and have to replace the ABS unit.

Any help is much appreciated!

There is a risk of pushing gunky fluid back through ABS valves. It happens rarely. When it happens it is usually a car that has been parked for a long period or has contaminated fluid to begin with from an issue like a long time left open brake fluid cap.
You could bleed/change the fluid before you move the pistons back if you think your car may fit into the mentioned conditions.
