2005 S40 cruise Control

Post by arfurwilson »

Morning all,

I am new to this forum and having had a look at some of the other topics discussed see that there is a wealth of knowledge out there that hopefully will have the answer to my porblem.

I have a 2005 Volvo S40 Desiel SE with a cruise control problem. When i activate the function from the steering wheel control i get the 'cruise' light on the dash board, however pressing '+' does not engage the system. As I mainly go to cruise control in fifth gear I thought the whole system was broken. However I have tried it in third and fourth gear and it works fine, does not drop speed and increases and decreases speed on the steering wheel controls.

I am hoping it is something simple like a connector of something, but I am not to mechanically minded.

Does anybody have any ideas?

Cheers Chris

This is an interesting problem you have here. On the manual cars, the only thing the computers in the car know about is whether you have reverse engaged. There is no transmission control module at all. The only thing I can think of is that your brake pedal or clutch pedal isn't returning to a fully homed position in 5th gear (my guess would be the clutch, since your brakes have a vacuum pump to run the master cylinder instead of using manifold vacuum), and that's why cruise isn't engaging. The car literally has no way of knowing what gear you've selected (save for reverse)...

I agree with VCA. Once in top gear try putting your left foot under clutch pedal and easing it upward a bit and then depress set speed button and see if cruise will control speed. Please do this on a road with little traffic so it is safer to be a little distracted from full attention to driving.
If holding pedal up makes cruise function then you need to have the clutch pedal switch checked. It is a supposed no-adjust switch but it could be loose or faulty.

Thanks for those responses...unfortunately it has not worked and the same problem persists. I tried lifting the clutch pedal and also tried the brake pedal in fifth with no joy.

Cruise still worked fine in other gears without lifting either pedal!

What next?

Cheers chris

Switch on ignition but do not start engine and then put it in 5th and then look to see if the reverse lights are on. I'm not sure if cruise is inhibited in reverse but if the reverse lights are on then I think you may have an answer. Then you find out why they are on.

Thanks all, have tried all of these suggestions without success. If the cruise operates normally in thrid and fourth am i safe to assume the actual control unit works ok?

I also assume that there is no problem with the steering wheel controls, again cause everything else works fine in thrid & fourth??
