What else can go wrong?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

What else can go wrong?

Post by Schuits »

Hey guys,

Thanks for the great source of information on these forums! 8)

Last year I purchased a S80 T6, but didn't realise what I was getting myself into
This is a small list of whats happened to the vehicle so far.

- On purchasing the car it had a nasty knock in the front suspension. The dealer 'fixed' it before delivery.
- The fuel pump cracked shortly after delivery. The dealer had it replaced (I believe this was a recall item in some places).
- Engine management lights came on, I took it to Volvo who read the codes. The guy gave me a printout of all the
errors the car was throwing. He suggested we reset the errors and see what re-appears.
- Error lights came back. On servicing the car I had the errors diagnosed. The Volvo dealer told me to sit down before they give me the bad news.

I eventually took the car to an independant Volvo specialist, which was another mistake.
They fixed the following
Front Spring Seat
Drive Shaft Service
Inner and Outer Control Arm bushes
Front Link Arms
Ball Join
Torque Arm Bush
Engine Pad
Rear Cam Seals
Ignition Coils (all 6)
Boost Pressure Sensor

An oxygen sensor also needed replacing. They tried cleaning it and replacing it with a 2nd hand unit but no luck.
Also the 'Rear Cam Seal' was 'fixed' 5 times, and still leaks. After reading these forums I suspect it's an overpressure issue to do with the PCV. The independant specialist should try reading the forums.

I've also had to replace the front tyres and battery.
So all in all thats been about 5k repairs on a car I payed about 11k for.

Its a love hate relationship. I love the luxury and power, but hate the fuel costs (about 17mpg) and maintenance :S
Right now I'm debating selling it and getting a cheap ford. The problem is nobody wants the volvo, I was offered a trade in
for the same value of the repairs I've done so far! lol.

Actually I'm wondering what else can still go wrong? Maybe I should just keep it!

How many miles/kilometres did it have when you bought it? Perhaps the previous owner let a lot of things slide....?
And sounds like you went to a crappy repair shop. All coils replaced? Doesn't seem likely that they should all go at the same time if at all...? If lots of mileage then a lot of the other repairs can be expected over time... Lets hope your tranny holds out because that is the big expense....

It had about 135000km on it when I got it. Full service history with dealers so I thought it would be ok. Unless he sold it because he knew it needed work.

I'm not sure what the story was with the coils. One day the car smelt badly of rotten eggs and all the power was gone.
Reading these forums I'm thinking that when the guys washed the engine bay it resulted in the coil problem. Had I know that then I would have confronted the service garage with it.

What are the signs of a transmission going?

You can read up on the potential problems about the transmission at the site:

http://www.tripleedgeperformance.com/

My 99 S80 T6 has about 130,000 miles (approx. 210,000 kms) and a lot of the things you listed were repaired (mostly under warranty) by the previous owner. He actually bought a new 2008 S80 V8 AWD when he sold the 99 to me. i.e. he seemed to still like the vehicle despite maintenance issues. It has been said a lot of places that it is very much a love-hate relationship.
If I had it to do over again, I would have done more research before contemplating buying it....
I think I would actually look for a low mileage 850 of 1996 or 1997 model year. But I am sticking with her for now.

Ok thanks for the information 8)
Reading the information I don't think I have any of those problems....yet.

I topped up with fuel yesteday....the petrol pump attendant looked shocked, "I just filled your car with a couple of million" he commented
