Vibration Has Me Baffled

Post by kmoney »

I have a 2004 S60 2.5t with 160,000 or so miles. I have 235/45-17 Pirelli P6 tires which I belive are the same that come from the factory.

I bought the car with 96,000 miles and it had a slight vibration that has gotten progressively worse. So here is what I've done to try and rid the vibration.

The tires have been replaced and the condition existed before and after the latest set. All the tires and rims have been in every different position on the car. Both axles have been replaced with remans from Axles Unlimited. Lower control arms have been replaced with all new bushings with the exception of ball joints but they look to be in good condition. Struts have been replaced along with HD strut bushings from IPD and new bearings. End links have been replaced as well as inner and outer tie rod ends. So basically the only thing left to replace are the ball joints and wheel bearings but I'm not really leaning towards either of those being the issue. Oh, I forgot to add that all the engine mounts have been replaced as well as the torque mount on the tranny.

So here's where it gets tricky. I recently swaped the right axle with the new one and the vibration got worse. So I put the older axle back in and the vibration was still noticeable but not quite as bad. So it seems that the newer axle almost magnifys the vibration..?? The only other thing I'm thinking is the transmission itself. Maybe output shaft bearing or something but I can't say I'm hearing any noise from the transmission. It seems like everyone that has looked at the car doesn't really have any idea how to diagnose they just want to start throwing parts at it but seems like that's the case nowadays everywhere.

Any direction, ideas, similar issues that anyone is having please let me know. Steps to eliminate things without just replacing parts would be helpful also. I enjoy the car but commute about 50 miles a day and it's becoming extremely annoying that I can't rid the car of the vibration plague...

I did every replacement that you did for a vibration. The wheel bearings made no difference. The one thing that stopped my vibration was replacing the rotors. Try that first as it's an easier fix and less expensive as well.
