Busted CV Joint While Replacing Balljoint?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Busted CV Joint While Replacing Balljoint?

Post by boosted5cyl »

I changed the balljoints on the '99 T6 and in the process, on the right hand side (passenger) I managed to pull the inner CV joint out of it's metal "housing". I got it to go back in OK (or so I thought) got the boot back on and soforth but now the car has developed a vibration on the same side, under acceleration only which I am assuming is from this joint. Everything else checks out OK.

Any pointers on how I can ensure I "seated" the inner joint properly? It all looks OK and the the play is identical on the inner CV joint on both sides. Im hoping I might have missed something in the process and haven't done any damage.

I did this on the left side shaft on my sister's 99 T6 a couple weeks back. Took it off the car and removed boot clamp and inspected and there was a missing "button" on the end of one of the trunnion axles. I fished around in the grease and found it and luckily it wasn't damaged. I installed the missing button and re-assembled and all is well now.
I've had dozens out and that was my first one to do that. I can only guess that some must not have that piece or it is retained better on other shafts.
99 S80's are never boring.
I see the cart in the back of the V70, I hope you have a Vespa or a Piaggio in the back of the S80........

Thanks jimmy57 for your insight. If I get time I'll take another look tonight. I'll post back with the results and hopefully get a couple of pics too. No the S80 is never boring. I'm getting tired of working on it though!

No 2smoke in the back of the S80, but it burns enough oil at idle to compensate. The motor on the kart is italian though, company called MC. They made a run of ICC motors and then dissappeared :-o

So a year and half later, I get around to pulling this shaft. I cant find anything missing from the inside nor anthing floating in the grease... Any other ideas?
Also cant get the shaft to release from the hub but I'm guessing some heat will help that happen.
