MY CAR IS A 1996 VOLVO 850 R I AM THE SECOND OWNER RECENTLY MY ENGINE HAS BEEN MAKING A RATTLING NOISE WHEN I REV THE ENGINE WHEN ITS ON IDOL THE CAR SOUNDS QUIET AND AS YOU SLOWLY START REVING THE ENGINE AND REV IT HIGHER AND HIGHER THE RATTLING GETS LOUDER AND SEEMS TO BE MAYBE A PISTON LOSE OR IF NOT IM NOT EXACTLY SURE WHAT THE PROBLEM IS IF ANYONE HAS ANY SUGGESTIONS AND IF I SHOULD TRY TO FIND A NEW ENGINE OR IF THERE IS A WAY TO FIX THIS THAT WOULD BE GREAT IT STILL DRIVES FINE BUT MAY NOT BE FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS AT THE MOMENT THANKS A LOT FOR LOOKING AT MY QUESTION HOPE TO GET SOME IDEA OF WHAT IS WRONG SOON.

+1 on the bad lifters. The clacking if you listen carefully comes and goes a bit. A bearing rumble or knock would be a deeper noise.
20 OEM lifters from IPD is not too expensive if I remember rightly. I'd replace the set as it is bloody hard to find which ones are the loose ones! And look at replacing your oil pan O rings while you are at it.

Probably litters being starved for oil by bad o-rings at the oil pan. Try those first.

i have been constantly checking the oil bc recently i have had a oil leak from the rear main seal which seems to be a problem with these cars i would like to change the lifters is it a hard job and time consuming?

do the o ring replacement in oil pan first. Aerated oil will cause tappet bleed down and tappets may not be needed if the o rings on oil pickup tube are failed and letting air in.
