no fuel to injecters - new in line fuel pump and new in tank

1985 240 DL 4 speed -----
Motor stopped running suddenly, without notice. I thought it was the in line

fuel pump so I replaced it. Just for fun afterwards I tested the one taken

out and it worked fine. The fuel pump in the tank is working well and I have

replaced the big fuel filter next to the in line fuel pump. Still no fuel getting

to the motor. When I spray starter fluid into the little hose under the intake

manifold and keep spraying the motor runs fine. But when I stop spraying

nadda. I suspect there is some relay (I already check the the fuses and

they are all fine) which runs the in line fuel pump. Anyone have any neat

ideas? Thanks scotto

92 940 no fule, jumped relay still no, both pumps dead, both replaceed in last yr, have 12volts coming in from ecu, [email protected]

Since this is a 1985... I'm assuming this is the system with electric fuel injectors, (not the previous year k-jetronic cis type)... correct?

If so, then you need to look for something that would attribute to all injectors (and fuel feed overall to the engine) failing at once.

Bad grounds, shorted wires in the wiring harness, wiring insulation disappearing in the plastic insulation 'glove'... located underneath the intake manifold. Difficult to get to, but an absolute must if you're going to find the culprit. This is looking at the engine side.

The way I check the fuel pump operation is to have someone else turn the starter over with my ear on the tank... and then again listen under the left side of the car to be absolutely sure the main pump is running. Another thing - remove the vacuum line (whilst turning the engine over) from the fuel pressure regulator to be sure there's no fuel coming out of it. It's at the front top of the engine at the end of the fuel rail. Has two lines axially connected. The one pointed to the back of the car is fuel, the one pointed to the front is vacuum.

Last thing other than this I would imagine the fuel management computer's gone to the dogs, or it's not getting power, check fuses and relays.

fwiw, never trust a fuel pump 'running fine' on appearance and piss range (in the driveway) only. The ONLY way to test a fuel pump's performance is to do it with a pressure gauge - that is one tough lesson learned about volvos.

Hello Everyone. I finally took the car (1985 240 DL) to the local repair shop after I crawled around in the local boneyards snipping off every relay that I could locate in crashed cars. Out of the 3 fuel pump repays I had obtained in this way, one of them turned out to be working, and after the used computer was put in, and a switching out of various fule pump relays took place, the motor started right up. A mechanic named engineboy suggested that fuses 4 and 6 had something to do with the problem. Apparently, fuse 4 is pre-relay and fuse 6 is post-relay (the fuel pump relay having two fuses so he says). Since all the fuses in my car were working fine at that time, this was not the problem with my car, although it is good to know that 1985 240 DL has two fuses related to the fuel pump. BTW the fuel pump relay in my vehicle was on the passenger side behind the glove compartment up under the dask board. It was white, not green or as black as some folks have said. Anyway, the mechanic stuck in one of the 3 useds ones I had obtained from the boneyard (the black one) (a six connector) and the car started right up (after of course replacting the main computer) grrrrr. Thank you very much for your comments and suggestions.
