Lower torque mount removal

Post by Wrenchinjoe »

The bolts holding the lower torque mount onto the transmission are crazy tight! You can't get a clean purchase on one of them with a socket due to a bolt head on the trans being in the way. I can't get enough leverage with my box end wrench to break it loose either. So simple, but ridiculously hard at the same time.

My question is : is it ok to remove the trans bolt that is in the way in order to put a socket on the torque mount bolts to get more leverage and prevent from rounding them?

Thanks.

I feel your pain, I've been there. In my case I bought a set of extended length combination wrenches from Harbor Freight and I was able to bust them loose. The wrenches were only about $25.00 but going to buy them gave me something to do while the PB Plaster soaked in.

I think it was this set that I bought, and they have been very handy for other things on the car.

Thanks Lee, I will pick up a set at first chance. But, is it ok to remove that trans bolt? It appears to be a trans cover bolt, should be no biggie to remove that in this instance, right?

You tried putting 2 combo wrenches together for more leverage, or a cheater pipe on the wrench?

I've never tried to remove that bolt so I don't know, in fact I'm not sure what bolt you are talking about. As I recall the whole bell housing was in the way on mine which precluded getting a ratchet to the big bolts.

If you take it out and it works OK let us know.

@ bigdaddylee82- I tried that, but didn't rig it right so the leverage wrench kept popping off - arghhh.

@ Ozark Lee - I went for it and pulled the trans bolt. The bolt is about 4" long which surprised me, but comes out clean, no fluid dumped, so initially it seems ok.

Between that bolt and the metal lines in that area access to the torque mount bolts is tight and tricky. Once I could get a socket on the bolt, I had good purchase and a cheater bar finally broke it loose. Corrosion appears to be the culprit, lots of white dusty corrosion came off on the torque mount bolt. Once I got the torque mount bolt out, I replaced the 4" trans bolt without issue. The new lower torque mount went in very simply from this point.

I am changing both torque mounts trying to eliminate some pretty fierce rattles in the left front suspension (@ idle only)after changing out struts (Monroe), strut mounts (Boge), & spring seats (IPD) and front brakes a couple of weeks ago. She's still up on stands this morning for an oil change but I'll post back it there are any issues. Hopefully OEM torque mounts will cure my idle vibration.

Thanks guys.

Did you have to support the engine somehow?

I need to replace the lower and upper mounts and I am wondering how you went about it?

Should I replace the upper first before going at the lower?

Do you have any pictures?

My mount replacement went real easy. However, I did it on my '95 T-5R and '98 S70 GLT.
