V40 driveshaft types and changing

Post by V40 OWNER »

Hi all, New to the forum, but not to Volvo's,
My 740 died just after Christmas, repairable, but I fancied a change. Brought a lovely V40, but around a month ago started getting that click click noise from the N/S CV joint ( roundabouts I'm guessing ). Anyway, I packed it with grease yesterday and the noise has gone ( for now ! ), but I want to buy a shaft ready for when it re-appears.

Here's the questions:
1. I have seen few for sale, but mine has no part number on it, can someone tell me ( pics ) how many types of shaft there are?
2. Would I be better changing just the CV, or pulling the whole shaft and replacing?

Many thanks, great site!

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

There are nine shafts listed for the 2001 V40 depending on engine and gearbox fitted to the car and, in some cases, the chassis number. There are six 1.8 engines and five gearboxes listed.

To replace the CV joint you would need to remove the driveshaft as well so really it comes down to how much you want to spend.

To get good prices for UK car parts I always use Parts Gateway. They act as agents for several new and used parts dealers, prices are better than the dealer and the service is first class.

This site is based in the US so quoting "Y reg" means nothing to most members, we just need the year.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for getting back to me across the water.
You said " There are six 1.8 engines and five gearboxes listed. "
Can I ask where these are listed please? matching a second hand shaft with the one I have may be a nightmare by the looks of it.

Thanks.

Thanks for getting back to me across the water.
I'm on the same side of the water as you.

The listings are on the Volvo After-sales Diagnostics and Information System (VADIS) disc. The Volvo 1.8 engines are B4184S10: B4184S2; B4184S3 and B4184S9. The S/V40 for the UK and European market also had two engines by Mitsubishi on the car designated the 1.8GDI. They were B4184SJ and B4184SM.

Having done a little more research on another disc I find that the B4184S3 and B4184S10 were fitted to left hand drive only. So we are down to the B4184S2; B4184S9 and the two Mitsubishi horrors. The S2 and the S9 both use the same manual gearbox, the M5P.

Drive shaft part numbers should be 8602181; 8601992 for model year 2001+; 8602293 for chassis numbers 834211 - 941907 and 8602801 for chassis numbers 941908+.

If you are unfortunate enough to have one of the Mitsu engines the part numbers are 8602170 to chassis number 47035; 8601767 chassis numbers 470336 - 599999 and 8601994 from chassis number 600000.

No wonder parts people get the wrong bits. :?

Hi Bill,

Many thanks for your help and time in this, my head is spinning at the moment. I have a driveshaft off a T4 laying ready to replace, the numbers on that are P614079 or T001208 which is nothing like the 860XXXXX numbers you have to hand.
There is no sticker on the one on the car, so I am clasping at straws here ... any suggestions?

The turbo engined cars use the M56 gearbox so that driveshaft is not compatible with the M5P box which, I assume, is fitted to your non-turbo model.

It appears that you are going ahead with changing the driveshaft or, at least, the CV joint. Has the noise returned since you greased the CV joint? I have known a re-grease last for years.

Hi Bill, nice to get you online. Just a little scream AAAAGGGHHHHH!!!!
Thats better. I packed some grease in it, and it did help for a few days, however I am still concious ( paranoid ) of the noise, or any noise. It still occurs if I have to pull from a junction quickly, so its got to be changed, but getting the right part is a nightmare. Would replacing the outer CV joint be an easier route would you know?

Ok, I have a driveshaft ( second hand ) which may or may not fit, and I have a outer CV joint brand new. On having a look tonight I found the new CV Joint has a 32mm nut and the driveshaft on the car and the second hand one has a 36mm nut!

Really confused!
