Changing my Transmission oil with synthetic oil
Changing my Transmission oil with synthetic oil
I want to get the transmission flushed and oil replaced with synthetic oil, the problem is I can't find a source of information to help me pick up the correct brand and grade for my 1997 850 T5. I been searching on this site for two days

Synthetic Dexron-III/Mercon Fluid will do just fine. You can pick up some Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF at almost any auto parts store. Though there is no hard data supporting it, flushing the tranny seems to hasten its demise in some cases, but not necessarily all. So it's one of those "do at your own risk" sort of things.

Volvos NEED fresh ATF. I have heard of no reports of a transmission flush causing a problem in a Volvo. I have heard of domestic transmissions that had been seriously neglected, were showing signs of damage, got flushed, failed, and the flush blamed instead of the neglect.
My '96 takes Dexron-III ATF. I think your '97 does also, but any good auto parts store or a dealership can look it up.
I like a synthetic. Mobil 1 is very good and readily available. It takes 12 quarts to do the job.

Many Dealers do a drain and fill (about four quarts) every 20K .It's as easy as an oil change except the refill as you need a very small funnel. There is a drain plug on the tranny. How is the color and smell?
