Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Turn the belt tensioner counter-clockwise and remove the belt. It is a serpentine belt.

yip sorry a small finger error there - my problem is i cant find the tensioner part on the pulley. I have the crank, waterpump, alternator and then the tensioner at the top.....but there is no place to turn it. The aircon is driven by a seperate belt. The tensioner pulley is a fixed thing. I read something about a torx screw that i have to turn but nothing changes when i do that

How does the tensioner release? My books only say to turn it counter clockwise and I assumed that a spanner on the centre bolt would do it, but I wasn't sure.

@sweiss
I'm doing the same job now myself. As you have said there is no tensioner, so how did you manage to get the belt onto the pulleys?

Any help much appreciated

Kind Regards
Paul

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

I don't know of any repair manual for the S/V40. However, up to and including the 2005 model year is covered by the Volvo Aftersales Diagnostics and Information System (VADIS) discs which can be bought on eBay for a modest sum. The disc includes a parts manual and a good repair manual for most jobs on the S/V40.

If your car is the later model in 2005 you will need the Volvo Vehicle Information & Diagnostics for Aftersales (Vida) disc which is a little more expensive, again on eBay. This one only works on a computer running XP Pro / Vista Business / Win7 Pro / Ultimate 32 bit. It does not work on Vista Home or Premium.
