Have your codes read, but the most likely problem is a faulty ABS unit. Check here for more info.

I'm new to volvo's, and I just got a brake job, brakes, rotors, etc. for the front and rear. Today I drive it to work and the Tracs off light came on and then a couple minutes later the ABS light came on. Is this possibly somehow related to the brake job.
Thanks

Yes. Remove wheels and check your wheel speed sensors for dirt/debris. They are the near the hub and are the only item near there with an electrical wire leading to them.

Or call the shop and ask them to do this.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

I too just had rear brakes replaced on a 1998 S70. The ABS and TRACS light are both now on too! The ABS sometimes activates at low speeds and is quite a surprise when it happens. Oh, by the way, the car only has 56000 miles on it....The shop where I've taken it says it needs to be "diagnosed." They are quoting about 350 - 600 for repairs to the ABS control unit, plus labor of 72/hr. The code indicates that it is a right rear ABS sensor that is faulting. Could this have been caused during a brake pad change?

Thanks.

You mean the right rear wheel sensor? If so, check to make sure the monkies at the brake place didn't dislodge the sensor and that the contact points are clean. If so, a brand new wheel sensor shouldn't cost you more than $100 and can be installed in 10 minutes including dismounting of the wheel.

according to mr Volvospeed
http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/abstrax.php
In the last five years I have seen one bad wheel sensor, and hundreds of bad control modules. If a repair shop should replace your wheel sensors and your problem returns, ensure that the cost of that repair (parts and labor) is carried over to what it takes to really fix the car.
I just had mine in for ABS light and the code read faulty right rear sensor and faulty ABS unit. The guy at Volvo said that in his experience it's hardly ever the sensor so I had them replace the ABS controller.
It was expensive (I am in the UK and everything here is expensive)

I disconnected the negative cable on the battery on my 98 S70 to clean out the flame trap, (all that went well). Then when I reconnect and restart and drive the car the ABS and TRAC lights come on and stay on....?? Did I burn it up or does anyone have any insight on this one? Thanks much!

Hi Matt,

I have the same problem. How would I "remove wheels and check wheel speed sensors for dirt/debris. They are the near the hub and are the only item near there with an electrical wire leading to them".

Thanks.

Since 2005, when this topic was active, it's become apparant that 90+% of these are caused by bad ABS modules.

If you do want to check your sensors, what do you need help with? How to take off the wheel (do one at a time)?
