1999 V70 Starts then dies Immediately

Post by ChadJohnson »

Hey guys, I have a 99 V70 that fires right up then immediately dies as if someone cut the fuel supply. My first thought is something with the immobilizer safety stuff. Since it dies within a second or two and there is plenty of fuel pressure at the fuel rail. Or atleast there seems to be. It squirts like a beast whenever I check it. I also pulled the Antenna Ring connection, cleaned it, and plugged it back in. I've cleaned the MAF. I just replaced the PCV system. Anything I might have missed in that? All hoses seem to be plugged back in. Can't see anything obvious. Battery has plenty of juice. I don't know. I'm lost.

Fuel pump relay. Put the jumper wire between #15 and #87 and try it.

Welcome to the site.

It's the antenna ring for the immobilizer system. This is a classic symptom for 1999 and 2000 models.

The ring around where your key inserts. Take the 3 torx screws out of the steering column, pop the clamshell off, and remove the antenna ring. Clean up the contacts on the plug and reinstall and see if it works again. If not, then you'll need to order a new ring.

I tried cleaning to connection of what I thought was the antenna ring. It's the same plug that lights the ring as well right? Or is there another connector?

We have lift off! It''s the fuel relay. I did the wire between 15 and 87 and it worked like a charm. Oh and for those of you who don't know what that mean, like me when I first heard it, there are four connection points on the relay. 2 of them are 15 and 87. Take any wire or paper clip and connect the 2 points. Anyway, going to pick up relay tomorrow and I'll let y'all know how it goes. See if it's still the issue in the morning ha!

So Volvo dealer wants $100 for part. IPD $54. No brainer. But can I run it around town with jumper wire or will it do damage or catch fire and burn to the ground?

Don't crash

Otherwise, you'll be fine. It's still switched by the ignition key.

You are good for short driving but don't crash the car. Pump will run until you turn the key to off position.
Buy the relay.

Had loads of problems with starting as described here.
Replaced just about everything ( 1998 V70 2litre 10 valve )
Fuel relay, camshaft sensor, coil unit - everytime it seemed to sort the problem but then it reappeared.
Antenna ring just replaced started beautifully ... but time will tell.
Did it myself - removed neg lead, undid the 3 torx screws in lower half of housing for ignition key.
Tricky to spring the lower half - did better by concentrating on top section.
Replaced antenna ring, put all back reconnected battery, reset radio code, .... and she started straight away, repeatedly stopped and started all seems okay. :P
