I was forced to take a detour yesterday on my way home from work, which took me a long way off my normal route to the extent that I almost ran out of fuel.
When I say almost ran out, the FUEL wording came up on the trip counter to warn me there was virtually no fuel in the tank. Now this got me home ok, just but it was almost out.
So this morning I have filled up on my way to work (petrol station just up the road). After filling up and as I pulled away, the car choked a little but carried on ok and shortly afterwards, the engine warning light came on.
Is this likely to be just as a result of excess gas build up?
I find it a strange coincidence that I have had the car approx. 3 months and have never had a problem but as soon as I almost run out of fuel the engine warning light comes on.
Looking for reassurance that there isn't anything major wrong! Car drives fine and for info, it's a 2001 S40 2.0 T
Thanks.
Out of Fuel / Engine Warning Light - is there a connection?

Did you remember to put the fuel cap back on tightly? The vacuum a missing cap creates sets off check engine lights.
Also, your S40 may have pulled up water or debris from the bottom of the fuel tank when it was low/out, and thrown a code which triggers the light.
