Fuel Inj. Fault Codes - How to check?

Post by Alaska_Volvo »

I have a 1989 240DL sedan and would like to learn how to check the diagnostic codes. One reference sit indicated I should be able to locate a little b;ack box with a wire, LED light and button on it... but the only box I can find has no light and no button. Can someone help me better understand what I am looking for? The car, though very reliable typically, has developed a problem where, after short drives, it refuses to start. You can hear the engine cranks, but won't turn over. Seems like a fuel problem. After knocking on the fuel pump and waiting, it will start. Not sure if the start is due to beating the pump or the wait. Anyway, long story short, I'd like to check the codes but need a little more help getting started. Thanks!

Your problem sounds very familiar to me. Search this forum for keyword "kmaniac" and read my posts about intermittant start and fuel pumps. I would bet money your in-tank filter sock has deteriorated and your main fuel pump is slowly dying. The in-tank pump may have already died. Check the fuse. This is an easy fix for the do-it-yourselfer but expensive if you pay someone. Let us know what you find.

I did an initial check on fuses... all looked fine but the problem persisted. So I just bought new ones and replaced them all. Check engine light is now off, and the car is staring fine. Diagnostics codes came out 1-1-1 for checks on both the fuel and ignition system. So for now... I hope the problem was simply a need to clean up the fuse and electrical connections. Other suggestions that have been made to me: check the fuel inj. relay switch, as well as the wire connections between the fuel system and the computer.

I've read up on the in-tank and in-line fuel pump replacements. It looks manageable? I'm not a whiz... but good at following *good* directions. Anyway... thanks for the help. Let me know your thoughts thus far. Thanks!
