Hi, I have a 1997 960 wagon, inline 6, with about 178000 miles. Obd codes checked at AutoZone are:
P0410 (Secondary Air Injection)
P0302 (misfire #2 cylinder)
P0102 (MAF)
I noticed that the clamp from the Airbox to the MAF was undone, so I secured it and aslo cleaned the connections to the maf. I didnt take the MAF out because I dont seem to have the right bit for the screws. Im guessing they are tamper proof?
I removed the top cover and looked at the coil packs on each cylinder, they seem to be connected, and clean, but I did notice that motor oil had pooled up in the recess on top of the engine, I have not pulled the plugs yet, but plan on replacing them soon (in consideration of that, can anyone recommend the best plug for the money to use).
As far as the secondary air injection system, after some internet reading, it looks like that will be a costly fix. The car is used by my 16 year old son (was his birthday present) and it seems to be running and driving well, but the check engine light codes are causing my some concern. We just registered the car, but I would like to get a handle on these emissions issues before next year comes around and we have to have the car emission tested again. Thanks for any help or advice.
Travis

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
The loose clamp on the MAF pipe would be enough to throw the code. I believe the screws are torx. Torx drivers are readily available at all good parts stores.
The P0410 code could be something as simple as a small exhaust leak.
The oil collecting on the top of the engine could be a poor seal on the oil filler cap. It is an item that is not usually checked on a service.
I always use NGK plugs in all the Volvos that I have owned and have never had any problems.
Bill.
