Low idle, Mass Airflow Sensor replaced

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Low idle, Mass Airflow Sensor replaced

Post by volvowner »

I just purchased a 2005 S80 from a dealer. I felt nothing wrong when I test drove it, but right after I bought it, there was a very rough idle -- steering wheel noticeably shaking, idle between 600-700 rpm -- and the check engine light came on. I took it back to the dealer and they replaced the Mass Airflow Sensor. The idle was still about 600 rpm, but the shaking was gone from the steering wheel. I could still feel a light vibration in the wheel when the car was stopped, but I'm not sure if this is normal or not. Should I feel anything in the wheel or should it be totally still? (I previously drove a Lexus and I'm not sure if I'm just used to the feel of that car and I'm overly sensitive to the feel of the wheel in the Volvo.)

The day after replacing the Mass Airflow Sensor, the check engine light is back on. The car drives fine with the only thing I notice being the light vibration in the wheel when the car is stopped and the idle at about 700 rpm (is this low, or is this where it should be?)

The car is warrantied by the dealership for 60 days from the purchase (it's been one week), so I did not have to pay for the MAF and I shouldn't have to pay to get fixed whatever has the check engine light on now. I would like to get everything straightened out as quickly as possible (before warranty is up) and cost is not an issue as long as the dealership is paying.

I appreciate any advice on how to get this under control quickly.

Drive to dealer ASAP. The clock is ticking. Find out what codes they get when connecting their equipment to car. Seems you should get 60 days warranty from the time when they permanently solve the problem(s). i.e. you should not have any CEL

The light came on Friday, I called the dealer immediately and I have a service appointment for Monday. The last time, the only thing the computer told them about was the Mass Airflow Sensor, which they replaced.

I'd like to know if there is something else that they should check that the computer might not report as a problem. Because it's on the dealer dime, I'm sure they just want to fix up what is absolutely necessary to get the light off and cross their fingers until the warranty runs out. As the owner, that is of course not what I want. So when I talk directly with a mechanic (who shouldn't mind charging the dealer for repairs) I want to know what I should be saying to get the car fully checked out, not just what the computer reports.
