Engine Replacement 2.5t

Post by bumgardner »

So I just talked to my mechanic. The news is not good. My wife's Volvo XC90 2.5t AWD is in need of a new engine. It has 144k miles on the clock right now. It is using about a quart of oil ever 1k miles. The oil is collecting in the lower end of the engine. My mechanic said that it would not be worth rebuilding the engine...

Any thoughts on a replacement engine?

this info seems very very vague. why does it need a new engine? 5 cylinder engines are the staple platform that is used in almost every line up volvo has.

thoughts are get a second opinion.

About all I know is that he said, that a lot of oil is getting though the piston o-rings.

Does that help?

Not enough information, is it throwing codes, running poorly. Could be as simple as a clogged PVC system. Get another opinion from a mechanic that knows Volvos.

I am getting a second opinion from a Volvo certified tech. The mechanic that I use is certified on other makes, but has not worked on many Volvos.

My mechanic checked the PCV. I have never heard of a PVC what is that?

The mechanic checked the PCV system, coolant, turbo, spark plugs, oil pan, etc trying to figure out where the oil is going.

Sorry, I miss-typed PCV not PVC

Positive Crankcase Ventilation System being clogged is the likely problem at that mileage.

This doesnt add up, on one hand I am reading busted rings, on another Im reading external oil buildup. Can you get pics of the oil buildup? Its possible the rings are shot, sure. But is really, really, realllllly rare unless oil changes have been missed. What method was used to check the PCV and give it a clean bill of health?

I'm out of town till next Wednesday. I will take things apart again next Saturday and post up the pictures. When I took it apart before taking the car to the mechanic it looked like the PCV system might have had a clog, because I saw some oil that had been dripping/leaking/coming out of part of the PCV system (can't remember what part at the moment I don't have the schematic in front of me). But, when I took it to the mechanic he said that was normal for the PCV system to have a little oil leaking out... I'm unsure of how he tested the PCV system to determine that it was ok.
