Catalytic Convertor

Post by jamestkirk »

:?: I have a '98 V-70 (132K) and need to replace the catalytic convertor ( check engine light is going off because of it). It's still in good shape, but would like to get people's opinion: buy a Volvo convertor or after-market?

Price, mostly. Some Volvo parts should remain true Volvo spec's (Bosch O2 sensors, for example) but some things can be aftermarket. For a cat, I'm sure you could go with anything that'll fit under there and has a hole for a rear O2 sensor. Since you're not in California, you can pretty much go with anything.

V, that's interesting because I just had both 02's replaced with after markets and still have the check engine light on. My mechanic said this time it's the cat. coming up on the code. He reccomended not going with after market as it sometimes won't clear the code. Maybe he should have said that for the O2's. :? :x

ox sensors should be volvo and cat should be aftermarket. I think your mechanic is shooting for fish in a barrel.

I would disagree with that in most circumstances
Most people have not had good luck with A/M converters
Try calling Erie
http://www.erievovo.com or 1888 volvo 13
They should have some used ones and...they guarantee them FOR LIFE, so if it goes bad in 6 mo, a year or whenever, they will replace it.
They charge about $300 or so for a used CAT

Hmm, now I'm a bit nervous - I just installed the IPD turbo back kit which includes a racing cat. I picked up two new O2 sensors so I'll keep you posted if I run into any CEL's from the setup.

Well it would have been better if you said that in the first place.
Now you know where to turn...
First, remove those 02 sensors and buy Volvo 02 sensors.
Sometimes Bosch can work, depending from car to car but any other brand usually does not.
If that doesn't work go back to IPD, but I'll bet those sensors don't work in this car especially with an aftermarket CAT
