1997 850 air conditioning

Post by guest »

I bought the self recharge kit that was mentioned on her and took the advice to hook up the guage with the car running and a/c full blast before putting any freon in. The guage would jump between 20 and 45 psi. as the condenser kicked on and off quite frequently (about every 15 seconds).
Do I need freon or is this another problem? HELP!!!

I think 45 is max you can do with the kit and 12oz can from autozone, The system will not take more than 45 that is the can pressure. Also 45 is the best for 850 see the AC manuals....you will get 30-40 cooler than outside temperature

I've got the exact same problem... did overfilling the coolant help?

An update from me... I TRIED to ovefill it, and it wouldn't go in... apparently, I've got enough in there... but that compressor is just cycling on and off like crazy.

Would that indicate a problem with the sensor? Seems to me if the sensor was bad, the compressor would stay on.

did you turn the valve wide open (even that it showed a danger level) ?

Do not worry if with the valve fully open the pressure will o to danger zone 80-100. it is normal till the refrigerant will circulate in the system to read high than normal. The high pressure is good for compressor to start running continuosly and not cicle on/off. As soon the compresor is running for 5 min the pressure will drop to 45 (normal /high).The system will not take any refrigerant after it reaches 45 and even you still have gas in the charging can it will not go in to the system. The recharging kit was designed to do that for safety. You do not even need the gauge to know how much refrigerant to add, just add till is full and the rest will remain in the can for later charge.
If the compressor is not starting to run continu you need to jump the 2 connectors wires on the pressure sensor near the fire wall.

Thank you for your reply....

About jumping the two connector wires on the pressure sensor near the firewall: I know the area you are talking about... one of the hoses is cold and the other is "room temperature." I assume you mean jump the connectors 1 time, not continuously... and this will "reset" the compressor? Can you be more specific about where these two connectors are, and how to jumper them i.e. with engine on or off... special kind of wires, etc?

Thanks for your help!

Jump the sensor on high pressure line located just before fire wall.Disconect the sensor plug and use a normal car wire to connect the 2 female pins on the sensor connector .That will comand compressor to run.Engine and ac shold be on.Do not let compressor run too long it may be out of oil.The oil is part of the refrigerant additives. As soon the compresor is running you feed the refrigerant in to the system till is full(it will take only as much).Let me know if you succeded...Use if you can find the refrigerant with oil and dye in order to detect where the leak is (if you have one) most of the leaks are at the feed valve and dryer/receiver.If you do not see a spot of oil or red dye anywhere and you still loose pressure -bad news-you have a leak on the evaporator inside the car near the blower. It is a very common problem because the bad design and incompatibility of aluminum and copper combination of the parts. In order to avoid as long as you can to replace the evaporator($1000/5 hour work)do not stop the ac when you stop your car let it the blower run with ac of for 10 min before you stop the car, till you do not smell wet /dump inside of your car. This way the evaporator will have the chance to dry and less chance to corodate because of mosture left on it.and use the ac less....
