Strange Noise when Turning

Post by turbotim2 »

This is going to be difficult to explain but here goes! Recently my 96 850 wagon makes a strange noise when I am turning to the left and at slow speeds. I notice it when I am at a light and making a left turn for example. The noise is like a resonance, a low pitched whirring noise. At first I wasn't even sure it was my car but it is. Any ideas? The strangest thing about this is two days ago my wife and I test drove a 98 XC and this car made the same noise except all the time, turning or not. After the test drive, mine started doing it! We really liked that other car too, if its something minor I will consider getting it (and fix the 850). Thanks for any help and Happy Independance Day!

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me, probably the right when since it happens when you turn left. Check out all of your steering and axle components while you're down there though including tie rod ends, cv boot, etc.

OK, thanks for the input. I drove the car all weekend and it hasn't really been making the noise again. I will post what I find.

I believe he's trying to say to grease the steering stops, but ungreased steering stops make more of a creaking sound.

Oh ok, thanks. Yea, I don't turn the wheel all the way to the stops so I doubt that is it. I am actually having a tough time now determining whether it is in the front or rear now. The more I listen, the more it sounds like rear.

Just a follow up, the bearings all seem to be good on the car. What I have found is that even with the car sitting still and off, I can get this noise from it by bouncing the car a bit. It seems to be coming from the rear right side. Maybe a squeaking shock or spring? Sound familiar to anyone?

From your last post it sounds like you spring seats/shock mounts to me.

Usually these tend to make a creaking/groaning sound.
