91 740 steering is really hard

Post by neworleans »

Hello everyone,

I got my 740 running now after sitting a year or so...
The steering wheel is really hard, it is almost impossible to turn wheels when stop and really hard to turn when driving slow.
I checked the fluid and it is fine, didn't see any leaks, belts look fine, everything seems like working but something is wrong..

Anybody has an idea?

Thanks in advance...

Pull your serpentine belt and see how easily the power steering pump spins. It sounds like it's not pumping to me.

you might also check the ball joints on this car. It is an easy repair, and will affect steering effort if they are bad.

A 740 uses V-belts, not serpentine. A slipping crank pulley (harmonic balancer) can cause power steering symptoms.

That sentence worries me. Would that be the same with a '98 S70 T5 SE? The steering is really hard at startup, requiring two hands to turn the wheel. Once turned from lock to lock about 3-5 times, it's "fairly" normal....i.e.: loosens up significantly.
