push on brakes, makes a loud clanking noise

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

push on brakes, makes a loud clanking noise

Post by jason3944 »

Recently purchased a 2000 volvo S80 T6. Had front strut issues, needed new bushings and sway bar bushings 134,000 miles, had dealer install. After they installed when you hit the brakes and car is coming to a stop, there is a noise like a bolt is sticking out and hitting something when brake is applied. I knew the car need brake pads, rotors, so i did them including, calipers, wheel bearing assembly I installed front wheel hub assembly both sides thinking that would take care of the noise and it has not, replaced the top motor mount...So was wondering on another thread I had read about the axle getting replaced with the bearing assembly, should I have replaced that as well, the car only makes the noise when the brake is applied ... I am trying to avoid the dealer again, car was purchased for my 16 year old daughter... I paid $1000.00, and car is in great condition, just need to fix that and should be a good car for years to come.
Thanks

I'd jack it up and check your ball joints and control arm bushings.

Thanks for the input, tried that and it seems ok , not ripped or worn out. not sure if the axle is suposed to have play in it, all seems normal cv boot is not worn or torn. will take apart again and see if everything is together right, car stops very well, and still makes the noise when the transmission is in neutral when stopping.

If the braking pads have been replaced, check if the brake disks are thin, if they are very worn don't drive the car untill they're replaced!
Other thing that once happened to one of my volvos was that the previous owner added incompatible brake oil and after some time instead of braking fluid the car's braking system was totaly clogged with a pasty resultan substance which blocked the brakes and produced such a sound every time I hit the brakes. Check if the wheels and the tires are hot to the touch after you drive around 5 minutes, if they are, the braking system has to be purged and thoroughly cleaned.
