1998 Volvo S70 rough idling and CEL! ""Update"" CEL P0301

Post by mikey4040 »

Well today my 1998 Volvo S70 encountered a strange problem. The car has been running good yesterday i drove it fine with no problems and today i was driving it and i was going onto the highway i hit the gas to pass on coming cars and all off a sudden as i picking up speed my car started to drive to a sort of stumble as it tried to pick up more speed then my CEL come on flashing for a few seconds and then it stayed on constant and it's still on. Now after that whenever i come to a stop like a red light or stop sign it idles rough almost feels like it wants to stall out. Once it gets moving it goes along fine it but when you come to stop it idles rough and when you try to take off from a stop it hesitates like it's lacking power. I have a cheap basic OBD-II scanner and it scanned 3 errors but displayed no codes for these errors. However i was able to shut off the CEL but when i shut the car completely off and start it back up it the CEL comes back on after a few. The scanner i have does work fine it worked on all my others cars and cars i used it on but it won't read any of these Volvo codes . What could cause this sudden rough idling and CEl to come on thanks?

Check spark plug gap, age of wires, and go somewhere like AutoZone and get a scanner that will read the codes. My guess is that you're missing. When was your last full tune up?

I just bought this car back in August of this year. It has 135,000 miles on it now and the other original owner did a tune up at 66,000 miles according to the maintenance records. Do i need to get a certain OBD-II scanner to read the codes on this car? Also is there a way where i can have the car running and check the wires to see which one is bad?

I forgot to mention the coder reader i have can read codes from Table A: P0001up to P0999 and also Table B: 1000 up to 1899 so I'm not sure why it won't display the codes. It also states applicable to all models since 1996 with a 16-pin diagnostic socket for generic OBD-II protocols (SAE JI850 PWM, SAE JI850 VPW, ISO 9141-2) is this compatible with this car?

Another thing i forgot to mention is when i do shut off the CEL (even though it won't display any codes) as soon as it turns it off an arrow icon on the dash right next to CEL flashes for like a second or two and then it goes out. What does this mean strange?

"""Update"" Got a code reader that was able to pull up a code P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Deteced

Well today i went to advanced auto parts and pick up the following:

New Spark Plugs- Autolite Coppers Part# 3923

New Spark Plug Wires - Autolite Professional Series Part# 97053

Bosch- Rotor & Distributor both parts look identical to the ones already in my S70.

Before i replaced everything i did a quick check by starting up the car and pulling out each spark plug wire from the spark plug one by one and looked for any change in the engine. Everyone i pulled made a noticeable change expect Cylinder 1 (also called out by the code reader). However i changed all the parts i listed above (and they were due) and still the same problem. I did the quick check again with the new parts by pulling up the spark plugs wires and again the same thing cylinder 1 had no noticeable change with the new parts. What can the problem be the ignition coil? Do i have to use only and change what i replaced to OEM Volvo Parts? I'm confused now what other causes could cause this cylinder 1 misfire. Thanks
