brake dust

Post by volvo850-mike »

My wheels are constantly dirty from brake dust and the problem is compounded due the fact that they are bright white alloys. Would I be better off getting ceramic pads or buying a set of those metal dust shields? Has anyone ever used these and how did they work? Thanks, Mike

That just depends on what you want. The ceramic pads can do wonders, but some people believe that not using genuine volvo pads can cause cabin vibrations (same with warped rotors anyhow). If your in to showing off whats behind your wheels (assuming you have rims), then the dust shield isn't your thing.

What I would say is to try either one of them (I personally would say try the ceramic pads), and see what works out.

Some aftermarket pads have a reputation for squeal.

I got ceramic pads. They work great. There's a little vibration now that I've had them for 8 months, but that's probably because with the more rigid pads they warp the rotors a bit. I definitely don't mind putting up with that slight vibration over the constantly dirty wheels.

So in my opinion, the ceramic pads are a good choice and ultimately anything you pick will have a some sort of negative.

another tip is,

1. clean your wheels with your prefered cleaner-rinse

2. then use a aluminum purpose aerosol (for ovens and aluminum)-rinse

3. coat with a fast orange cleaner-wipe

..............it will leave a fine natural oils layer that works amazingly well at resisting sticky brake dust, I have been doing this for years and it does not harm anything. It even helps to make the cleaning process faster and easier. repeat when you wash your car.

I call this the "anti-brake dust treatment".
yes......It is an 850!

Thanks for the replies. Just wondering if anyone has tried the dust shields and get some opinions on that option as well.
