Hi; I am a new member to the Mathews forum. My 1992 940 gl with 278,000 mi died the other day. I changed out the distributor cap & rotor but that didn't help. Fortunately, my golfing buddy is good friends with Shane here in Salisbury and they came over to look at it.
Appears the timing belt has a flat spot-3" or so.
Can anyone suggest what I should do while I have the timing belt off. There is some oil around the nut on the timing belt pulley as well as the tension pulley. Also, can anyone recommend a site that describes how to change the timing belt.
I love this car and don't want to junk it just yet.
Bill

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
Timing belt renewal on the B230 engine is quite straightforward. The attached has the instructions:
Some things extra from experience:
When you remove the fan line the inside of the radiator with thick cardboard to stop any wrenches or other bits going through when they slip. At least one will.
The hardest part of the job is removing the crankshaft bolt. You will see that a Volvo tool, part #5034 is specified for this. There are many other methods bandied about on the internet but using the correct tool is the safest, and quickest, way of doing it. The crankshaft pulley sits on a small key in the crankshaft. The more violent methods of loosening the bolt can break the key, making the job very expensive. If, as you say, you are going to keep the car it may pay to buy the proper tool. Our sponsor IPD has them at $49.95. This link takes you to the listing.
If you can work steel or know someone who does you can find plans for a home made tool here.
If you don't know when the tensioner was last replaced I would advise that you do this now.
Bill.

Is this an interference engine?
If so, This motor has been turned over many times while trying to figure out the problem and was wondering if damage has already occurred? The first part of the PDf file states to align timing marks before removing belt or valves may contact pistons.
Don't want anyone jumping into something if there is a lot more then meets the eye.

If it is the 8 valve engine it is non-interference. The 16 valve engine is definitely interference.
