Post by TerrytheRoofer »

Hi I have a volvo estate, one of ebays best! It has a power seat for the driver which has works fine. It has buttons 1 & 2 which I assume means I can set it to remember positions. Can anyone tell me how to do it ?
Thanks Terry :)

I am used to seeing the MEM button along with 1 2 and 3. On those seats you hold the MEM and the number you want ,down together for a few seconds and it is in memory.

Please put your Model Year in your profile so more folks can chime in

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Your subject line is for a 940 but your profile shows a 960. As I am from the UK I understand that the 'P' in your profile indicates a '96 - '97 car. However, this site is in the US and 'P' means nothing to most members.

The memory seat controls should show buttons 1, 2 & 3 and the MEM button as stated by JDS60R. This is the same set-up for the 940 and the 960 and this should help:

UK registrations are complex. The original plates had 1 or 2 letters with anything up to 4 numbers. This then changed to 3 letters with up to 3 numbers. When all combinations were used up the system changed to numbers followed by letters but still having a maximum of 6 characters. In February 1963 all possible combinations had been used up so a suffix letter was put behind 3 letters and 3 numbers. ABC123A showed a car registered between February and December 1963. This continued up to 1967 when some bright spark in our government decided that most people bought new cars in August of any year so E lasted from January to July 1967. In August 1967 the letter F was issued and subsequent years saw the letter change on 1 August. The suffix letters I, O, U and Z were not used so the system was grinding to a halt by July 1983. Another 5 watt light bulb lit up in the corridors of power and it was decided that a prefix letter would be put in front of 3 numbers followed by 3 letters. The plate A123ABC showed a car registered between 1 August 1983 and 31 July 1984. Again the letters I, O, U and Z were not used as prefix letters. In 1998 there was a power surge in the corridors of power lighting up a 2 watt light bulb and it was decided that the prefix letter would change on 1 March 1999 (T) and again on 1 September 1999 (V). This twice a year change would continue until all of the prefix letters had been used. This system stopped on 31 August 2001. At this time there wan't enough power to light up any wattage of bulb so somebody came up with the bright idea of 2 letters, 2 numbers signifying the year of registration and 3 letters - AB01CDE. The first letter indicated, to people who needed to know, the place of registration. The 01 was the year identifier and the last 3 letters identified the vehicle.

Still with me?

A reverse flow of electricity then took over and all of the light bulbs went out when it was decided that 01 or 02 etc would run from 1 March to 31 August of any year. From 1 September to 28 February (29 in leap years) the number would be 51, 52 etc. When 1 March 2010 arrived the numbers became 10 but on 1 September 2010 the number changed to 60.

Of course it is still possible to buy vanity plates which totally throws the above out of the window as we can have a 2012 car running on one of the very old plates - AH167 is one I have seen recently on a 2011 car.

That is why I advise UK members to tell us the year of registration.
