rattle in reverse

1989 240 DL Sedan, automatic.

Shifter rattles/knocks when car is in reverse. Doesn't happen in any other gear. Seems to shift and drive fine. Someone thought this might be worn bushings? Any other ideas? If it is bushings, is it a manageable job for a very willing but rather unsophisticated/inexperienced do-it-your-selfer? Thanks for the help...

89 240 DL Sedan. Shifter rattles when in reverse also. This started happening after the linkage slipped and got stuck in reverse so I had to drive it backwards through town to the mechanic. After they repaired the linkage the rattling started in reverse. I am anxiouse to read an answer to this as well. I fear it's the beggining of the end of my transmission.

Could that be what happened to my 86 740!?????
