Spare Tire for S60

Post by pcritikos »

Just replaced my 12 year old S80 with a 2012 S60 R-design. I'm really impressed with the car except for the fact that it doesn't come with a spare tire. Since I live in a remote area I would like a spare vs waiting for a service truck. The dealer is fairly proud of their over-the-counter spare tire and I am not a fan of the u-fix-it goop. I am curious is anyone has gone to an auto recycler to pick-up a good condition doughnut tire from a retired Volvo? I think the bolt pattern is the same as my old S80 and other earlier year Volvos and my S80 had the same size that the dealer wants to sell me - 125/80/R17. Also, would the spare need a TPMS unit?

We just picked up our S60 T5 over the weekend, luckily we picked up from online reviews that this car does not include a spare tire so we called the dealer immediately and told them that we would not be coming if they did not include the spare tire kit for free...which they did, its actually nice looking, in a leather like pouch and stuff (not just a tire and jack laying around your trunk). You would not need a TPMS for the spare, and if you get lucky, you might be able to pick one up from a wreck yard (just make sure its the same size). Most auto dismantlers usually pull all the tires/wheels off and sell them up in front in the wheels department. Although some dont bother going under the trunk for the spares. The set is about $250 I think from Volvo parts department. (Also check out the myvolvopartsonline.com link at the top of the page, they have great deals. You would think a car company that has built its name on safety would include such a basic thing into such an expensive car, but I guess not. I was told by a couple friends that almost all cars in Europe now don't come with one, so Volvo is just following the trend?
