I just bought a 2001 S40 1.9L Turbo and am excited about driving it. It has 186K + miles.
I want to know how concerned I need to be about the following codes:
1) P0605 - MIL control circuit malfunction
2) P0303 - Cyl #3 misfire detected
3) P0420 - Catalyst efficiency below threshold (Bank 1)
4) P0507 - Idle control system RPM high
Other Questions:
a. I'm sure "2)" is an easy fix; both coil packs are cracked and 2 new ones on order.
b. Code reader stored engine speed at 1126 RPM. While idling the engine revs for a maybe 1 second up to around 1100 RPM then back down to the normal at around 900 rpm. Is this a concern?
c. What does Bank 1 mean and where is it located?
d. Some of the dash lights don't work. Can they be replaced?
e. There seems to be a small oil leak around rear side cam gear. Can this be easily fixed when changing the timing belt? Is this a major or minor concern?
f. I can hear noise around the sun roof while driving faster than 35mph. Noticed some water marks on the fabric at the top of the pillar. Is this an easy fix and how?
g. Exhaust seems slightly loud while driving. Is this normal for a Volvo?
h. There are no records of the timing belt being changed but it looks fairly new. I'm not sure if I should wait until 210,000 miles or do it now.
Thank you for any replies!
Jim
Code Interpretation and other ?s
2) Cracked coil packs are no good. Replace w/ OEM parts. Might be prudent to check the spark plugs and wire set. Do you know if the plugs were changed recently? Again OEM parts.
3) Could be a vacuum leak, could be oxygen sensors, could be the exhaust manifold (might need new gasket), could be the catalytic converter, but rule out cheaper options first.
4) Clean the Idle Air Control valve w/ carb cleaner, let dry, be sure to replace IAC gasket w/ new one. Possible replacement of the IAC. Could also mean the Mass Air Flow sensor needs cleaning or replacement. When cleaning the Mass Air Flow sensor, only use Mass Air Flow sensor cleaner.
Search around the forum for more in depth explanations, theory, reasoning, etc. Good luck.

zulu-v40,
Thank you for the advice!
2) I don't know if the plugs or wires are new either but I have new spark plugs and wires that I plan to replace. Just waiting for the coil packs to arrive.
4) I will check and clean the IAC control valve and look at the MAF sensor.
I will also search the forum for more info.

Here a few of the sites I've been using to order parts:
fcpeuro.com
fcpgroton.com
volvowholesaleparts.com
autopartswarehouse.com
Of course you could also hit the junkyard. The two FCP sites are run by the same company, but sometimes prices vary a bit.

I've read the OEM plugs should be gapped at .28.

Just found this site yesterday. They've got diagrams that are very helpful in identifying parts. I think they're the same diagrams you would find when referencing VADIS for repair instructions. Wonderful resource for someone trying to do things DIY.

Update...
Plugs, wires, coil packs changed. Transmission fluid changed.
Haven't got to the MAF sensor yet. Hopefully today.
The engine is running more smoothly now.
Still contemplating the timing belt. Would it be important to change the water pump at the same time? Why?
Thanks.

Basically, the way I've seen guys explain it on this forum, is that the water pump will likely need to be replaced soon after replacing the timing belt. It's an ease of access situation I suppose. Changing the belt allows you to change the pump. Other folks seem to recommend replacing the Timing Belt Tensioner and Idler Belt Pulley at the same time. With 186,000 miles on your car, you should probably replace the belt, tensioner, idler pulley, water pump/water pump gasket/water pump bolts. Some people would probably recommend checking the cam seals and replacing if necessary. I haven't done the Timing Belt job yet, but I've read a lot about it on the forum. I think people would tell you to do it ASAP.

I don't believe this is the first TB change on the car; if so you do not wanna wait any longer for the belt to break or a bearing to seize unless you got a spare engine on the side...
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

Thanks for the explanations guys. I will get the timing belt, water pump, and idler pulley replaced very soon.
As far as the cam seals; I see a small amount of evidence of a linear oil spray in and around the timing belt. Could this be the cam seal?
Thanks.
