Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Serious S80 Timing Belt Install question

Post by UncleBoost »

Someone ..Please clarify...i think this is why my car runs so sh!tty...
Once you go thru all the steps with the VVT hub and Bolts reference...Cams Locked...Crank locked...all 3 Marks Lined up...VVT torqued, Cog at rest 1.5 teeth from upper timing cover mark on Exhaust cam.
Do you install the belt while holding the VVT HUB rotated to it's mechanical spring Stop, Marks lined up.. or should it be installed with the marks lined up at rest with NO tension on the VVT hub spring? Also, My Bottom Crankshaft mark is lined up on the "RIB" of the timing gear and NOT the Valley.. but the Photos in the direction show the mark lining up in the Valley and NOT the RIB.. What should it be?.. And also turning the engine over by hand twice, and then 180 degrees CW PASSED the mark (on the crank) Then back to the marks..<------is this step to balance out the tension on the Timing Belt or to UNLOAD the Exhaust Cam which is where my VVT hub is..??.. This is where I get confused.. Hub Loaded or not when the Belt goes on...??..

Thanks

Doesn't matter if it's loade or not. It just needs to be on the mark. So the going past the mark and back just unloads it. I don't do that because I use the preload to keep the belt on.

Yes it has to be in the valley on the crank between the TWO marks.

Thank you for the fast reply... I timed mine on the Notch..or RIB.. so do I keep the Cams LOCKED until the Belt is On? Or do I Unlock the Cams then install the belt.. (I've read one set of instructions where you unlock the cams and install the belt.) I left the cams locked when I installed my belt.

You don't need a cam locking tool on any of these timing belt jobs. Just set timing, remove belt and rollers, and then reverse...

Are you saying your mark on the block to the crank pully is in the valley or on the high spots?

The HIgh spot...the way the Drawing arrow showed...and that is where the Line or that Postive hash mark is on the Crankshaft Hub...its like a line that sticks up a little..It too is Lined up with the High spot and not the Valley..I think? Either way, i lined it up with where that Line in on the Hub. If its Keyed then i guess it is ok since they all should be the same..

I feel like such an idiot.. but a Happy one!!!
Thanks for all the suggestions which really helped especially the one that about checking the Coil pack wires. What I didn't realize is that the #5 cylinder coil pack should have been installed 180 degrees as opposed to the other coil packs. I also saw fotos of this and was able to determine the correct color code for each cylinder. So at 3:09 am this morning, I went out into the shop and saw that I had the #5 connector plugged into the #4 coil pack an vice versa.. Since I received the car basically with a box of parts I had no way of knowing that the orientation of Cyl 5 coil back was reversed in order to accommodate the wire harness..SOLVED!!! after 3 months of working on this...the car runs great now. Thanks for all your help brothers...

UB,

I am working on my 2000 S80 2.9L non turbo trying to get the timing set. 1. I don't have the instructions for my car. Can you verify a couple of things for me? Are the timing marks on the crankshaft timing pulley two tiny little marks on each side of one valley groove? 2. Is the timing mark on the block the long line to the left which looks like it's centered or the shorter line to the right of it? I have to finish taking off that harmonic balancer today and lining these marks up right. I appreciate any advice you can give me especially about these timing marks. I'm a 22 year Air Force vet trying to get rolling again. Thanks

I put a timming belt on our "95 Volvo. There are some very good post/photos/instructions in that section of the forum. You might try looking at some of those. I'm not sure though how closely related the two motors are. I would consider myself as average mechanical skills and was able to do the job with no problems. I did use the cam locking tool and I will use it again when I change the belt on my '06 S80. Better safe than sorry.
