reprogramming alarm remote and ignition key for 2002 v70 XC

bottom line, it's impossible. DO NOT BUY any used remote fobs or non-OEM keys from eBay or other online dealers. unfortunately, i learned this the difficult & expensive way... i bought two "Volvo" ignition keys and two used OEM remote fobs on eBay, but i quickly realized that the reprogramming tips on this and other message boards DO NOT work for models newer than 2000. in fact, you have to have a complete software update to program all of your keys (old & new) to the same electronic code. this can ONLY be done by the dealer, using a brand new software license that is unique to each individual vehicle.

similarly, the remote fobs have to be reprogrammed, as well. all of them. and, in order to reprogram the remote, you MUST HAVE THE ORIGINAL OEM PACKAGE that it came in. the dealer needs the UPC code from the package, in order to program the remote...

like i said, i found out the hard way, after i'd already spent $50+ on eBay. so, for one new key and one new remote, i was charged $291.33 at my local Volvo dealer. and that was AFTER a 20% discount!!! all told, i spent over $300 just to make a spare set of keys for my 2002 v70 XC 2.4L AWD. BOOOOOO Volvo!!!

Not boo Volvo, Almost ALL cars are this way now, (and most of us already know this).
It's called YOUR security.
Is it expensive, yes, but go buy a Mercedes and then find out how "cheap" a Volvo key is!
