instrument cluster

2002 S60 I have an intermittent connection to the cluster. Friend who owns used car dealership states it is a common problem and to shim by cutting rubber wedge’s and placing them between the dash and the clear plastic of the cluster. This worked for a while but the wedges kept getting thicker! Any ideas would help
