1995 850 non-turbo wagon - does this engine sound funny?

Post by Fay »

Hi,

I recently had the timing belt, water pump and serpentine belt changed on my 1995 850, non-turbo wagon. The engine in this car has always been noisy. But since the changes it seems to have picked up some extra noise. I can't describe what I hear that's different but it does sound different.

I've posted a video on YouTube that's basically just trying to pick up the sound of the engine. The car is in park and is just idling. The sound quality is not great but I hope somebody can take a listen and tell me if you hear anything funny about it and what it might be. The link to YouTube is

I'm sure I win the prize for a vague request but maybe somebody's in the mood for a challenge!

Thanks,

Fay

That sounds pretty normal to me.

The injectors are making the clicking noise, and it normally has that weird sewing-machine noise.

Sewing machine noise is a great way to describe it!! And that's the noise that seems to have gotten louder since the repairs I think.

Do you know what causes the sewing machine noise?

Thanks!!

That "sewing machine" noise is just the sound the engine makes when it runs - from that clip it sounds just like my car. That's the cylinders moving air and whatnot. If it has gotten a bit louder, maybe you have some kind of
Intake or exhaust leak?

Add 502 with a 10-40W conventional oil change (after engine warms up) and it will be quieter than a normal oil change and the car will have more pick up.
Great Feedback on the 502 product

After 3,000 miles use 306 15-40W and you are good to go for 1 year intervals

Thanks for the responses! I'm glad to know the engine sounds pretty normal! Thanks jblackburn for the suggestion on the possible intake or exhaust leak. Maybe something didn't get reconnected tightly when all those belts were replaced.
