Leaking Coolant

Post by Arnettii »

Hey guys,

I am just wondering where the source of my annoying coolant leak.

I had the expansion tank replaced by my Local volvo dealer about 3 months ago when the coolant light first came on,

The light is now coming back on so Ive gone out and bought a 50 50 mix to top the expansion tank up for now but would like to be able to stop this problem all together

Thanks,
1997 850 - 330,000 Km

Man, there is no way we can tell you where your leak is. You might have to have the system pressure tested or add some dye to it to find the leak.

How often does this happen? If it's happening a lot, Is your car heating up? The basic problem on all 850's is that the radiator fan stops working which causes the coolant to not get cooled. This causes the coolant to go to the expansion tank and because there is a lot of preassure the coolant starts bubbling out of the expansion tank's cap. The same would happen to my 850, so no matter how much coolant you are going to fill, it won't make a difference.try and fix the rad or the fan sensor.

Hope it helps :)

Is it a turbo model? If so, look at the coolant lines heading into the turbo - they are leaking and about to explode on almost every turbo model I've seen.

If not, anywhere coolant goes will leak on these stupid cars. I had a crack in my radiator that would only leak under pressure, occasionally leaving a drip or two on the ground when the car was parked. Took me FOREVER to actually find out where it was coming from.

Also check the heater core. Mine was leaking coolant all the way bybthe rear passenger tire when my heater core was bad.
