Transmission really going out?

Post by xera23 »

I have a 1989 740 Turbo with 121k miles. When one part goes out and others follow suite... I'm getting a very rough idle and smoke from the muffler. Also have to let off the gas to shift up to 20/30 mph and the car seems to surge on occasion at 40. It doesn't stall. My RPMs seem to flux randomly at idle (700-1200) and while driving (2500-3025). Noticed a burning or gas smell randomly too.

All my fluids are great. I've replaced spark plugs and wires. Cat con, new muffler, alternator, secondary fuel pump, power module, ignition coil, battery, hall sensor/distributor. Adjusted the kick down cable and idle, transmission module is getting great pull. Cleaned the throttle body as well. After replacing the catcon and the problems persisting my mechanic said it could be my transmission, but would that really cause my car to blow smoke? I refuse to admit it :/ It's doesn't seem to slip out of gear and there is no audible clunk... possible its running too rich and the fuel pump wasn't installed right? Or the kick down cable needs replacing? Any ideas on where to go next?

bad trans could never make the exhaust smoke. its not attached to the exhaust. a bad turbo or head gasket could cause smoke out of the exhaust, is it using any fluids? to rich would cause black smoke from exhaust.

All the fluid levels are fine, nothing comming out of the exhaust, no leaks or bad hoses. Having it towed to a shop tomorrow to check the fuel system. I'll be sure to ask about the turbo and head gaskets, figured he'd just said that to get me to pay for a new transmission. You know us women, we'll hand over that kind of cash no questions asked ;)

Engine performance problems can effect the transmission operation.

Turned out i had a plug wire loose, fuel wasn't getting burned off causing it to smoke and run rich. Transmission gave out as i was showing him how i'd have to let off the gas to shift -.- luckily i can get it done for just over 1k, might as well with as much as i've already put into it! Thanks for all the help guys!
