Transmission going out.

Post by DutchSasquatch »

Evening gentlemen. I have a 99 V70 GLT FWD auto, I think the trans might be on its way out. It shifts kinda hard, sometimes hesitates, and when i drained the fluid it was BLACK.

My questions are,

Should i rebuild or replace it?

Is a manual swap significantly more work than a rebuild or replacement?

If not what manuals from which cars will work?

If looking for a donor car which models/years have the same auto?
there is a cheap crashed 98 S70 non turbo auto FWD as well as an even cheaper 98 XC on CL, thinking of picking one up if there is good parts compatibility.

Thanks for any advice you can give me!

Run about two gallons high quality ATF through - pump it out, DO NOT FLUSH IT, and give it a week. Then drop the pan and replace the filter. I'd be willing to bet it's fine but clogged with junk.

I’ve got a good 4 speed AT from a 1998 already removed in very Western VT ready fir pickup, cheap for the Freedy, Free to the Needy. History is it came from Sonics 1998 with about 220k

Most engine parts from a 1998 won’t go to the superior 1999 model, that’s why we drive them.

Is this mostly when it is still cold? Reason I ask is the first couple drain and fills I had a horrible time with it sounding like it was slipping and then slamming into gear.

All right, Ill continue to do the drain and fill, and then filter replacement. I'm in vergennes VT, you can hardly get more west than that, maybe I'll come by and say hi sometime, I think I'll wait and see before picking up your tranny. Thanks guys!

How bad does the fluid look when you're pumping it out? Mine came out like curdled chocolate milk the first couple times. I think I used a total of 4 gallons over a couple months to really get it where it is now.

Dutch, you have the 5 speed auto, correct? If so, the 98s are useless to you. you will be limited mostly to 99 and 2000 models, perhaps up to 04.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

According to rock auto there is a filter in it. The fluid wasn't chunky or anything, just very black.
