105,000 miles, Volvo dealer serviced since new! Two fold problem? Last 1,000 miles, it started as a howl at low speed and now it's a bad vibration at high speed. We're told that rear drive shaft center bearing is junk. Never had a trailer hitch! Shouldn't this bearing last longer? $1.K to fix!
First question: Can a good drive line shop replace this bearing?
Second: Since vibration started, tranny shifts with a 'BANG". Is the bearing causing this?

You can ask them, if they do ... make sure they garantee the work.cranecrew wrote: First question: Can a good drive line shop replace this bearing?
Yes, it can. Basically, you just have to fix the obvious noticeable problem first.cranecrew wrote: Second: Since vibration started, tranny shifts with a 'BANG". Is the bearing causing this?

I hope I'm not too late in pitching in my $0.02.
I had a tranny "bang" problem in my V70 AWD as well. After working with the chief mechanic at the stealership we managed to figure out that the driveline is very sensitive to differences in tread depth between the front and rear of the car. I put new sneakers on my money pit and the problem went away immediately.
