Check engine light is on and Volvo dealer tells me the Air Pump # 9179271 needs to be replaced. What does this pump do? I'm pretty competent mechanically, is this something I can repair or rebuild?
Thank you

it's the Secondary Air System, depends on the CEL code.

Check this out:

You can fix this for little more than $15 at Radio Shack and about 45 minutes of your time. i did mine a couple weeks ago and it's been 300 miles and the code hasn't returned. The air pump basically helps trim your fuel levels for emissions reasons.

Thank you,
If I do this, will the pump be working, or would adding the diode just remove the error message?

You'll just be bypassing its functionality altogether. This will stop the CEL and allow you to actually remove all the components of the SAS and not have to worry about it. It's generally agreed that this system is useless. However be forewarned that this violates any local emissions regulations and should be used as "off road" only, or only as a temporary fix until you can afford to get it working again if you need to pass an emissions inspection.

If it is the pump, a new OEM can cost in the $400.00 range. Water gets into them through a bad check valve usually and fries the motor. I replaced mine the first time with a pump from a VW after doing a little wiring. It worked great, but the holes I drilled in the bottom of the pump to drain off water didn't do the job. So I have gone with the (temporary) fix for now, until I locate another pump. The fix is easy and I think the part cost $1.29 at Radio Shack.
