Building a custom header NA B6304

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

Building a custom header NA B6304

Post by gmtgmt »

Im putting a early 2.9 (3.0) 960 engine in a 1995 960E wagon that came with a 2.5 and M90 tranny

I got everything sorted out only have a small qoustion.

I would like to put a header on along with a costum downpipe and cat, to get rid of the dual layer pipes from the manifolds to the cat. this should be the best mod you can do to these without going +T

I know theres a header out there for BMW that will fit with slight mods but i want my own. I have a exhurst port flange from R-sport international.

Are there any thing i should take into consiteration when building one, i read somewhere that the pipes almost have to same length?

Any Input will be greatley appriciated

There is a lot of concerns when designing a header. You may want to mimic what is on there as the design is proven.
That aside - yes- you want equal length tubes up to a collector to keep the cylinders from emptying differently. An anti reversion collector is also a good idea.

I don't think and improved exhaust will help greatly but it doesn't hurt. I find the restrictions are usually in the cat conv or the resonator.

But before I look at exhaust I would see what is available for cams.

I have some early cams (150KW or 204hp) that I'm happy to part with for the cost of freight from Australia.

If your motor is post '95 you'll have lower output cams
