850, like it's out of gas, turning over with no start

Post by superfing »

SO I posted before about a starting problem I have with my 850. Occasionally, my car will not start right away. It basically acts like a car would that ran out of gas, turning over with no start. When this happens I turn my key off and to position II then off a few times and then it will start no problem. My car runs and idles excellent no matter what.

I had the fuel pump then the housing replaced by my shop. I have replaced the relay under the hood, there is spark every time. I am getting fuel to the rail when this happens.

It does seem to be happening in hot weather after I have driven the car somewhere and come back out to leave. Never on the first start of the day. This happened last summer, then went away over the winter and spring after I replaced the pump relay so I thought that fixed it. There are no codes.

Please help??!

You can purchase a 'noid light at an auto parts store. Ask someone other than a young kid where to find it...they'll look at you like 'huh?'

Use that to check for a pulse on the injectors when this happens.

I am checking all of them? I have never heard of this. Why do you think this could be a problem?

I've been surfing forums. Somewhere I read a post with symptoms somewhat like you're getting (I think his was starving when hot, but running). A Volvo tech told the owner to check the hose clamp on the hose from the pump to the housing. They come loose b/c they don't have a ridged spur to hold them together. The tech told him to use two clamps on the hose and that would fix it.
It worked. He got full power back.

Just one. Sometimes the fuel injector relay goes bad on 850s.

I think the "housing" he was referring to is the pump housing. I'll look at a pump I have to get a better sense of it and post back.

I dont think it is the pump housing b/c it was just replaced and it was doing it before replacement. It was not loose when I looked at it before it was replaced.

I will check the injector and report back after it hapens.

Hey,

Just wondering if you ever determined a source for your "like it's out of gas" problem?

I have an 850 that has been doing the same thing off and on for a while now. Never does it when cold never when fully warm, only when i start from cold and drive less than a mile or so (quick run to the store, or to fill up with gas).

I Occasionally get a cel code for front o2 sensor-slow response, replacing both very soon, hope it helps.

Thanks,
Sean
