XC90 Rear Number Plate

I have bought a private registration in the UK and need to change the vehicle registration plates. I've done the front one but find I can't unscrew the two steel screws on the rear tailgate in order to remove the old number plate. I assumed it would just be a simple screw. Am I missing something? Is it a bolt that has to be removed from behind the plastic panelling on the interior of the tailgate? Does anyone else know of any difficulty in removing these two number plate screws?
