cold starting 240
cold starting 240
My 86 240 is hard starting cold, idle will race a little and then come down to a stall. Keeping foot on throttle will warm it up enough to drive but it idles very rough. Cannot set baseline idle. have changed out AMM, Idle air bypass, have set throttle, have spark and injector function at all cylinders, no apparent vacuum leaks. Was running it like this for a while until the other day it went into limp mode just after leaving the house. Turned around and parked it, next day it wouldn't start at all. Today it runs like before, hard starting and rough. Any help?

I know this may sound silly, but I've seen it in my shop a lot, with your problem. On the side of your distributor, there is a slotted bracket for you to adjust timing. Make sure that isn't loose. My own 88 had that problem when it was given to me. Beyond that, check your Throttle Position Sensor. That can also cause that problem. Get your car running, and unplug the TPS, if nothing changes, you can assume that is the culprit. If you replace it and it doesn't fix it, just take the new one back. No skin off your back. Good luck, friend.
thanks. Dist was tight. quick check of tps suggested it was the problem (unplugging it while running to no change) but replacement of same didn't help. I replaced the oxy sensor and now it starts & runs okay, thought I had fixed the probloem, but still idling way too rough & stalling when cold. Still won't let me set baseline idle, running through entire adjustment range cannot nail correct rpm with meter reading higher than suggested idle rpm but idling like it's way too low. When I open the throttle it stumbles. In spite of all this, it is drivable. I just can't trust that it won't go into limp mode miles from home at any time. Also, sometimes when turning the ignition to start I get that godawful flywheel screech, you know what I mean? I appreciate my Toyota more and more each day.
