850 Tailgate Molding (Below Glass)

Post by ShahinS »

Hello Everybody!

Planning to hit a local junkyard to get a replacement Tailgate Molding (directly below the Glass), the metal part on mine is rusted out.

What is the removal and installation procedure for this molding?
What would happen if I just leave it off? It is really just a decorative piece, isn't it?

I pulled mine out.
Less moisture and rust.
Just twist it and out it comes.

Used won't work. It won't come out in one piece. It's IN there good, and it's metal.

I took mine off and didn't have any issues. I've heard some speculate that ice could build up and crack the glass, but I didn't have that problem.

I used to have a wagon exactly like yours.

Took mine out about 2 weeks ago. Come out in about 700 pieces (car from up north). Took one out at the salvage yard and it come out in 1 piece (southern car), but it bent and was not usable.

My guess is that it stops water from getting into the tailgate but I don't think I can get a new one in mine, to much of it still behind the glass. I do need to touch up the tailgate under the glass.

Another disappointment..and from a company supposedly used to snow and ice conditions! You would think an aluminum, plastic, or rubber piece would have been used there...they use plastic everywhere else in the car!

When new, I believe the seal is aluminum and rubber. The problem is, when you see it going bad, it should be change. It's only about $35.

When the tires wear out, you change them, when a coolant hose leaks, you change it, when a light bulb blows out, you change it. Just have the darn thing changed instead of chunking it full of silicone and watching it rott out.

Spent another hour digging the old seal out of the bottom of the window. Turns out that there is another seal behind the glass. It's about 1/8" up from the bottom of the window glass and it is very soft rubber.

Seriously? What a pain in the Neck! I thought this would be a 5m job, but it looks like I might as well should leave it alone, I got a clear duct tape on one side holding it in place. So I can take the car to carwash atleast. It looks totally ghettolicious thu!
